Helicopter transport in big bags — efficient for loose materials
The big bag (also known as a bulk bag) is the efficient way to transport loose materials, gravel, sand, soil and bulk materials by helicopter. A purpose-built rigid bag keeps the load contained, protects the material during flight, and makes unloading at the delivery site fast and precise.
What can be transported in big bags?
Gravel, crushed rock and aggregate
For cabin foundations, footpaths, lawns and drainage fields. Typically 800-1100 kg per bag.
Sand and fine aggregate
For on-site concrete mixing, floor backfill or landscaping.
Soil and compost
For garden landscaping, green spaces and terrain restoration.
Cement and dry mortar
In sacks inside the big bag — tightly packed and protected from the weather.
Construction waste (disposal)
Removal from cabin plots or construction sites without road access. Efficient and compliant disposal.
Industrial pellets and fill materials
Power plant construction, wind turbine foundations, telecom installations.
Practical advantages
- Rigid bags keep their shape in flight — better handling than loose bags
- Standardised volume makes it easier to calculate price and rotation count
- Fast unloading at the delivery site — a bottom spout opens the bag
- Reusable — the bags can be returned for new rotations
- Safe — minimal dust dispersal and spillage
Pricing and volume discount
Big bag transport is typically priced as price per rotation or hourly rate with rotation count. Factors:
- Number of bags / total tonnage
- Distance from base and pickup point
- Helicopter type (weight per bag)
- Volume discount for large quantities
For large assignments (10+ tonnes) we can offer a fixed price per tonne with a clear delivery plan.
Preparations
We recommend the following for a fast and cost-effective assignment:
- Order the big bags well in advance — available from mixing plants and builders merchants
- Have the bags ready-packed and labelled with their contents before the helicopter arrives
- Arrange a pickup point near a road with space for both the mixer/truck and the helicopter (min 20×20 m)
- Plan the delivery site — the area where the bags are to be emptied must be accessible and cleared
- Consider sharing the flight with neighbours who also need fill material
